L.A. is facing a budget crisis – and Angelenos shouldn’t pay the price. City Council must act now!
L.A. IS IN A BUDGET CRISIS
Los Angeles is facing a massive budget crisis driven by high costs, lower-than-expected tax revenues, and growing service demands. While lay-offs to city workers have been temporarily avoided, the city is already facing difficult choices, including potential cuts to public services like trash pickup, public safety and emergency response. At a time when costs are rising for Angelenos, City Hall has yet to act on real solutions. Our city needs new, sustainable revenue now to protect services and avoid deeper cuts.
WE HAVE A SOLUTIOn
With millions of visitors planning to attend the 2026 World Cup, 2027 Super Bowl, and 2028 Olympics, L.A. has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to maximize the benefits of tourism to close the budget gap and protect city services. Short-term rentals already generate major tax revenue for the city, but in order to help bridge the budget gap, they can be leveraged even further to help prevent anticipated layoffs. By allowing a limited number of people to rent their second home, Los Angeles can unlock millions in new, annual tourism revenue — paid for by tourists, not taxpayers!
This is a practical solution to help prevent cuts, protect jobs, and strengthen our city’s financial future.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS
By passing the VACATION RENTAL REVENUE PLAN, City Council can:
Save public services and help prevent mass layoffs of city workers.
1
2
Support small businesses and neighborhood economies by increasing tourist spending.
3
Ensure L.A. is prepared to accommodate millions of travelers for major events.
City Council must act now to close the budget gap and create more revenue without taxing Angelenos. This simple solution captures more tourism dollars to help fund essential services, without burdening working families. The plan creates new, annual revenue for the city including:
$110 Million
in tourist occupancy taxes, paid by visitors
$100 Million
in increased visitor spending that supports local businesses
